adjective (i)

Part of Speech

I-adjectives (い形容詞) are adjectives that end in い and conjugate directly to express tense and negation.

Explanation

I-adjectives (いけいようし), also called 'true adjectives', are a class of adjective whose dictionary form always ends in い. They are unique in Japanese because they conjugate on their own — unlike na-adjectives, they do not need だ or です to connect to a noun as a predicate. This means they encode tense and polarity directly: たかい (is expensive), たかくない (is not expensive), たかかった (was expensive), たかくなかった (was not expensive). Formation rules: to negate, replace い with くない (たかい → たかくない). To form the past, replace い with かった (たかい → たかかった). Past negative: くなかった. The て-form for listing or connecting is くて (たかくて). To modify a noun, i-adjectives appear directly before it in their dictionary form: たかいやま (a tall mountain). One important exception: いい (good) is irregular — it conjugates as よい in all forms except the plain present: よくない, よかった, よくなかった. I-adjectives can be used adverbially by changing い to く: はやい (fast) → はやくはしる (run fast). Watch out for words like きれい and きらい that end in い but are na-adjectives, not i-adjectives.

Usage Patterns

Noun-modifying
Place directly before a noun in dictionary form.
たかい山 (a tall mountain)
Adverbial 〜く
Replace い with く to use as an adverb.
はやく走る (run fast)

Exception: いい (good)

The adjective いい is irregular. All conjugated forms use the older root よい: よくない, よかった, よくなかった. Only the plain present uses いい.
